What is Rising Damp?
Rising damp occurs when water infiltrates from the ground, encircling the foundations of a building. The natural porosity of brick and stone allows moisture to gradually permeate these materials. Heat facilitates upward movement of moisture carrying soluble salts - sulphates, nitrates, and chlorides - through capillarity. The extent depends on material porosity and evaporation rates, with fine-pored masonry allowing water to ascend higher than coarser materials. Left untreated, rising damp accumulates substantial salt quantities within building structures, causing timber decay, increased heat loss, structural deterioration, and potential health risks.

- Crumbling, blistering, or peeling paint and wallpaper near baseboards
