What is Penetrating Damp?
Penetrating damp, also known as lateral damp, is a moisture problem that occurs when water infiltrates through walls from the outside. Unlike rising damp which moves upward through capillary action, penetrating damp enters walls from the side, often when ground level is higher than the damp proof course (DPC) or through defects in the building's external envelope. This allows water to penetrate below the protective barrier, primarily affecting lower floors, cellars, and basements. It can also occur higher up through damaged brickwork, faulty pointing, cracked render, or defective guttering allowing rainwater to seep through walls.
